St. Simon's is a loose collective of highly creative people, who enjoy collaborating in order to present an accurate depiction of Elizabethan England along with providing a central hospitable gathering place for faire folk to interact with each other. Our founding principals of hospitality and attention to historical accuracy are as strong today as they were when the guild started.
The Axe and Oar is a functioning Inn, actor's rest area and a living stage where patrons can sit and talk with guild members and feel part of the action. Our goal as a Guild is to paint a picture for each patron, and then draw that patron into the picture with us. Patrons can get a hands-on experience of what it's like to be part of the household with duties as well as a place where ladies from all classes and guilds can come and gossip while doing hand work.
When Master Shakespeare is present in the shire, the Axe and Oar is his primary residence. Patrons have an opportunity to read sonnets, audition for plays, learn and sing songs, and enjoy an immersion-type experience.
How does St. Simon's Guild continue to thrive? The answer is St. Simon's Guild is constantly moving forward. We work with other guilds by embracing and incorporating their storylines and agree to go and support them at events that St. Simon's doesn’t actively attend as a Guild. We continue to be a venue for traveling guilds and performance groups while continuing to be hospitality oriented.
We interact with the patrons and work to engender in them the same love we have for this amazing, crazy thing that we do. We work to give patrons hands-on opportunities to "be" one of us. We reach out to the interested patron and give them an opportunity to get their feet wet in a safe, nurturing, and accurate environment.
As for the guild members... They are the faces and heart of St. Simon's Guild. Each member has a unique and special talent and an important role to play in our guild yard and in our future. We all have something to offer even if it's only for one event, one day, or one hour. Our requirement is that when you are with us you give your absolute best and actively contribute to the entirety of the concept.
